Song of the Day #1,030: ‘Several Miles’ – Ron Sexsmith

Ron Sexsmith’s first album was an independent release titled Grand Opera Lane that I have yet to get my hands on. It was recorded with a band called The Uncool, and that pretty much sums up Sexsmith himself.

His first studio release was a self-titled disc released in 1995. I consider this Sexsmith’s worst album, though in a Sure Thing “this is the ugliest girl in California” postcard kind of way. There is a roughness and uncertainty about it (though, admittedly, that’s also part of its charm).

As Sexsmith tells it, this album was relegated to the bargain bins before Elvis Costello began singing its praises far and wide, effectively rescuing it, and Sexsmith’s career. The two have circled each other ever since (as evidenced by last weekend’s posts).

Several miles have come between
All for the best it seems
and just in case you’re listening
To this song, I will make it
clear that I still love you

Whatever happened, it don’t need to be second guessed
We move from one home to a new address
Oh it’s just miles, miles behind us
Miles to go, miles behind us

Several miles have come to pass
The smoke has cleared at last
Into our lives we disappear
‘Til it’s just a song that you sometimes
hear as you’re passing through

Whatever happened, it don’t need to be second guessed
We move from one home to a new address
Oh it’s just miles, miles behind us
Miles to go, miles behind us

I’m listening too
Oh it’s just miles, miles behind us
Miles to go, miles behind us
Oh it’s just miles…

Several miles have come between
All for the best it seems, and just in case
you’re listening
I’m listening too

Very nice song. Perhaps the problem with this album had more to do with production, as I believe his later work had a richer sound.
