Song of the Day #937: ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’ – The National

Coming in at #9 on the Pazz & Jop singles list is The National with their song ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio.’

I skipped song number three, Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own,’ because I’ve already featured it on the blog. Numbers four, five and six are all tracks from Kanye West’s new album. Seven is a Big Boi track that didn’t do much for me. Eight is a song by a band called Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti — and unfortunately their name is the most interesting thing about them.

That brings me to The National at #9, and this one I like a lot. The lead singer has a low growl that reminds me of Leonard Cohen, and the song is built on a sort of grand, sorrowful wall of sound. I don’t know that I’d listen to a whole album of this stuff (and having sampled the rest of their latest album, High Violet, I can tell that’s exactly what it is) but this track is a keeper.

And I love the line “I still owe money to the money I owe.”

Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I lift my shirt up
Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I lift my shirt up

I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees
I never married but Ohio don’t remember me

Lay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too far
Lay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too far

I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
I never thought about love when I thought about home
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
The floors are falling out from everybody I know

I’m on a bloodbuzz, yes I am
I’m on a blood buzz
I’m on a bloodbuzz, God I am
I’m on a blood buzz

I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees
I never married but Ohio don’t remember me

I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
I never thought about love when I thought about home
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
The floors are falling out from everybody I know

I’m on a bloodbuzz
Yes I am
I’m on a blood buzz
I’m on a bloodbuzz
God I am
I’m on a blood buzz

pretty cool song. Now I know what it would sound like if you morphed Robert Palmer, Billy Idol and Conan O’Brien.

By the way, what do you think a “bloodbuzz” is?

I’m not sure. The song is pretty ominous and most of the lyrics seem to be about losing control or surrendering to one thing or another, so maybe it’s a reference to death, or perhaps a more metaphorical kind of bleeding.
