Song of the Day #900: ‘Telephone’ – Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé

Best Songs of 2010 – Honorable Mentions

Another week of honorable mentions before I get to the proper 2010 countdown next week.

I don’t buy into much of the fuss over Lady GaGa but she has released a few songs I enjoy. ‘Bad Romance’ and ‘Poker Face’ are tops among those, with ‘Just Dance’ as a runner-up.

This year she scored a hit with the single and video release of ‘Telephone,’ another club-ready dance anthem that proves you can write a song about anything so long as it’s supported by a good chorus and beat. This one is about not wanting to be interrupted by phone calls while at a club. As somebody who hates the telephone, I can relate.

The song is enhanced by this wild extended length video which pays homage to women’s prison films and the work of Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill‘s Pussy Wagon makes an appearance). GaGa is bailed out of prison by Beyoncé and the two of them then poison the occupants of a nearby diner. What this has to do with telephones I’m not sure.

But once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger.

Hello, hello, baby;
You called, I can’t hear a thing.
I have got no service
in the club, you see, see…
Wha-Wha-What did you say?
Oh, you’re breaking up on me…
Sorry, I cannot hear you,
I’m kinda busy.

K-kinda busy
K-kinda busy
Sorry, I cannot hear you, I’m kinda busy.

Just a second,
it’s my favorite song they’re gonna play
And I cannot text you with
a drink in my hand, eh…
You shoulda made some plans with me,
you knew that I was free.
And now you won’t stop calling me;
I’m kinda busy.

Stop callin’, stop callin’,
I don’t wanna think anymore!
I left my hand and my heart on the dance floor.
Stop callin’, stop callin’,
I don’t wanna talk anymore!
I left my hand and my heart on the dance floor.

Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…
Stop telephonin’ me!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…
I’m busy!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…
Stop telephonin’ me!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…

Can call all you want,
but there’s no one home,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!
Out in the club,
and I’m sippin’ that bub,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!

Call when you want,
but there’s no one home,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!
Out in the club,
and I’m sippin’ that bub,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!

Beyonce:
Boy, the way you blowin’ up my phone
won’t make me leave no faster.
Put my coat on faster,
leave my girls no faster.
I shoulda left my phone at home,
’cause this is a disaster!
Callin’ like a collector –
sorry, I cannot answer!

Not that I don’t like you,
I’m just at a party.
And I am sick and tired
of my phone r-ringing.
Sometimes I feel like
I live in Grand Central Station.
Tonight I’m not takin’ no calls,
’cause I’ll be dancin’.

‘Cause I’ll be dancin’
‘Cause I’ll be dancin’
Tonight I’m not takin’ no calls, ’cause I’ll be dancin’!

Stop callin’, stop callin’,
I don’t wanna think anymore!
I left my hand and my heart on the dance floor.
Stop callin’, stop callin’,
I don’t wanna talk anymore!
I left my hand and my heart on the dance floor.

Stop callin’, stop callin’,
I don’t wanna think anymore!
I left my hand and my heart on the dance floor.
Stop callin’, stop callin’,
I don’t wanna talk anymore!
I left my hand and my heart on the dance floor.

Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…
Stop telephonin’ me!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…
I’m busy!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…
Stop telephonin’ me!
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh…

Can call all you want,
but there’s no one home,
you’re not gonna reach my telephone!
‘Cause I’m out in the club,
and I’m sippin’ that bub,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!

Call when you want,
but there’s no one home,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!
‘Cause I’m out in the club,
and I’m sippin’ that bub,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!

My telephone!
M-m-my telephone!
‘Cause I’m out in the club,
and I’m sippin’ that bub,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!

My telephone!
M-m-my telephone!
‘Cause I’m out in the club,
and I’m sippin’ that bub,
and you’re not gonna reach my telephone!

Boy, I know I am apparently supposed to like Lady Gaga as she is appreciated by other artists I respect such as Elton John and Billy Joel, but I really just don’t care for her. I will admit that “Bad Romance” is catchy and it did grow on me. “Poker Face” is so hooky that it’s hard to get it out of your mind whether you want to or not. But this song does nothing for me and, other than for the sake of prurient interest, I find the video pretty awful as well.

I admit that Lady Gaga has grown on me over these past months –
Glee helped me to appreciate her music after I had pretty much dismissed it before watching that episode. The songs I like best are Bad Romance and Poker Face (though I like the Glee version better). Daniel tells me that I like Paparazzi, but I had to have him sing it to me in order for me to know what that song even is. Based on his rendition, I’ll agree that it’s also a good song.

This one has, of course. been yanked from your site, so I will now go investigate. I remember watching just a few seconds of the video when it first came out – and adding that tiny sample to the evidence that Gaga was overrated. However, I certainly didn’t give it a fair chance then, so I will go give it a fair chance now…

It hasn’t been yanked, you just have to click on the “Watch on YouTube” link in the middle. They’re doing that with more and more clips these days.

  4. Amy says:

Ah yes, you’re right. Well, I didn’t find it all that interesting. I far prefer the couple of songs I mentioned yesterday to this one. Still, that video is a throwback to the video events of the 80’s, so I appreciate her attempt to add another work to that art form.
