Song of the Day #520: ‘Mother Nature’s Son’ – The Beatles

It’s funny how now matter what Beatles song you pull up on YouTube or elsewhere on the Web, you’ll always find several people who consider it their favorite song.

I suppose, given the long tail of the World Wide Web, that’s the case with pretty much any song by any artist. I could probably post an obscure B-side by a band that put out one poorly-received album in the 90s and find somebody who wants it played at his funeral.

But when it comes to The Beatles, I can understand it. Just about every one of their songs is worthy of being somebody’s favorite.

Take ‘Mother Nature’s Son,’ a song I haven’t paid much attention to in my life. It’s a very pretty song, lighter than air and full of peace and hope and oneness with nature. It not only could be somebody’s favorite song, it damn well should be. Yet it’s hidden away on Side Two of the overflowing White Album, a gem that’s difficult to find only because it’s completely surrounded by other gems.

With the exception of ‘Revolution 9.’ OK, I’ll give you that one.

Born a poor young country boy–Mother Nature’s son
All day long I’m sitting singing songs for everyone

Sit beside a mountain stream–see her waters rise
Listen to the pretty sound of music as she flies

Find me in my field of grass–Mother Nature’s son
Swaying daises sing a lazy song beneath the sun

Mother Nature’s son

Lighter than air. I like that. As I played it and surfed around a couple of other sites, I was surprised to realize it was over and I hadn’t yet formed much of an opinion. So… here goes again… It’s a lovely little song; my favorite part by far is the way the music and tempos changes as he sings the second line in each verse. Other than that, I don’t find much that interesting about it.
