Song of the Day #515: ‘Loser’ – Beck

Through 514 songs on this blog I’ve somehow managed to feature Beck only once, which is strange because he’s one of the most innovative, talented songwriters and performers in my collection.

I’ve held back from featuring individual songs because I’ve always felt him worthy of a theme week and his number just never got called.

Until now. I’ll feature songs from each of Beck’s nine studio albums over the next two weeks, starting with the hit that first propelled him to fame.

‘Loser’ is perhaps the most nonsensical hit song in history, or at least the most intentionally nonsensical. Beck “wrote” the lyrics during a free-association improv session laid over a guitar-and-drums track he’d recorded earlier. He says he was so disappointed in his rapping that, when it came time for a chorus, he chose to chastise himself (in two languages), giving birth to the slacker rallying cry that blasted from many a car stereo and discman in 1994.

Of course, over the next 15 years (and counting), Beck would prove that he was anything but a loser. A career launched by a stoner white-boy rap that had all the markings of a one-hit wonder would turn out to be one of the most consistently rewarding in the business.

In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey
Butane in my veins and I’m out to cut the junkie
With the plastic eyeballs, spray-paint the vegetables
Dog food skulls with the beefcake pantyhose
Kill the headlights and put it in neutral
Stock car flaming with the loser in the cruise control
Babys in reno with the vitamin d
Got a couple of couches, sleep on the love-seat
Someone came in saying I’m insane to complain
About a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt
Don’t believe everything that you breathe
You get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve
So shave your face with some mace in the dark
Saving all your food stamps and burnin down the trailer park

Soy un perdidor
I’m a loser baby, so why dont you kill me?

The forces of evil in a bozo nightmare
Ban all the music with the phony gas chamber
Cos one’s got a weasel and the other’s got a flag
One’s on the pole, shove the other in a bag
With the rerun shows and the cocaine nose-job
The daytime crap of the folksinger slob
He hung himself with a guitar string
A slab of turkey-neck and its hangin from a pigeon wing
So get right if you cant relate
Trade the cash for the beat for the body for the hate
And my time is a piece of wax fallin on a termite
Who’s choking on the splinters

Soy un peridor
I’m a loser baby, so why dont you kill me?

Great background info on this song.

This is not the Beck I appreciate most, as I prefer his more acoustic works. He is, however, undoubtedly a major talent, and one with whom I would like to become more familiar.

So bring on the theme week. Educate me!
