Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and I’mma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. Of all time!
Kanye’s asshead move at the VMA’s aside, I have to admit he has a point. ‘Single Ladies’ is indeed a fine video. And song. But mostly video.
There’s a lot to admire in this video but I’ll go the nerd route first and call attention to the cinematography — the way the camera swoops and zooms around the dancers as if its the fourth member of the group. Fabulous lighting and (lack of) art direction as well.
Now I’ll get to the real reasons this is one of the best videos of all time.
1. The fact that no matter how many times I’ve seen it, I still want to watch the whole thing whenever it’s on.
2. How totally I forget that there are three women in the video, so focused I am on Beyonce.
3. Her smile at the 2 minute mark.
4. :52 – :57… enough said.
Now put your hands up
Up in the club, we just broke up
I’m doing my own little thing
you Decided to dip but now you wanna trip
Cuz another brother noticed me
I’m up on him, he up on me
Don’t pay him any attention
Cuz I cried my tears, GAVE three good years
Ya can’t be mad at me
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
I got gloss on my lips, a man on my hips
Hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
Acting up, drink in my cup
I couldnt care less what you think
I need no permission, did I mention
Don’t pay him any attention
Cuz you had your turn
But now you gonna learn
What it really feels like to miss me
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t treat me to the things of this world
I’m not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Is a man that makes me, then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
Pull me into your arms
Say I’m the one you WANT
If you don’t, you’ll be alone
And like a ghost I’ll be gone
All the single ladies
Now put your hands up
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it woo oh ooh 2x
Well, I’m sure Maddie, and maybe Amy, may chime in on this:) And in fairness to Taylor, her video, while not artistically groundbreaking, is still adorable and moving. Not sure if you have even watched it, so here it is:

As for Beyonce, well this song is positively addictive, as is the video. And, yes, I’m sure the lighting and camera movement contribute to the video’s captivating quality, but it is in the end Beyonce who is truly mesmerizing. You just can’t take your eyes off of her…and I don’t think it matters if you are male, female, gay, straight, whatever…:)
I am here not to disparage Taylor but to celebrate Beyonce. 🙂
And I agree the Taylor Swift video is very sweet.
Imma let you finish, but Kurt does a better Single Ladies than Ms. Beyonce herself. 🙂
Okay, now that I get that off my chest. I find it intriguing and ironic that Beyonce and Taylor Swift are up for the greatest number of Grammy awards (with Beyonce besting her by 2 nominations). I don’t know that Taylor will have as strong a chance of winning any of those, but if she does… I certainly hope Kanye hasn’t been ivited to attend.
He’s actually up for the third most Grammys.
