Song of the Day #465: ‘All My Loving’ – The Beatles

beatleswithI consider With The Beatles more of a John Lennon album than a Paul McCartney one — in addition to yesterday’s SOTD, Lennon contributed highlights ‘It Won’t Be Long’ and ‘Not a Second Time’ and sang lead vocals on the excellent covers ‘You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me’ and ‘Please Mister Postman.’

But Paul delivered the album’s most famous song and its best, ‘All My Loving.’ This is one of those songs you just sort of accept as always existing in its perfect pop form. It’s easy to ignore the craftsmanship of a song like this because you’re too busy simply enjoying it. But make no mistake, it’s expertly crafted.

One of my favorite things about ‘All My Loving’ is the use of those quick pauses after each verse, and the way the vocals start up before the guitar and drums kick in. I wonder at what point something like that happens. Is it there from the start or does it happen by happy accident in the studio?

A morbid bit of trivia about this song… it reportedly came over the hospital PA system around the time John Lennon was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound. That must have been a surreal moment for the people working there.

Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
Tomorrow I’ll miss you
Remember I’ll always be true
And then while I’m away
I’ll write home every day
And I’ll send all my loving to you

I’ll pretend That I’m kissing
the lips I am missing
And hope that my dreams will come true
And then while I’m away
I’ll write home every day
And I’ll send all my loving to you

All my loving I will send to you
All my loving, darling I’ll be true

Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
Tomorrow I’ll miss you
Remember I’ll always be true
And then while I’m away
I’ll write home every day
And I’ll send all my loving to you

All my loving I will send to you
All my loving darling I’ll be true
All my loving All my loving ooh
All my loving I will send to you

Just love this song! Boy, that must have been spooky hearing this song when John died, how sad.

  2. Dana says:

This really is a perfectly crafted song, made more interesting by the tempo change for the chorus.

And yes, that John Lennon fact is just downright creepy.

I don’t think it’s creepy at all. I find it somewhat comforting, and, of course, sad.

I’ve always loved this song; its sweetness is so earnest and not at all cloying.
    It’s lovely.

This is probably up there with my favorite Beatles songs… That song playing before they found out what happened probably made the whole thing that much more powerful for all those people.
