Song of the Day #168: ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’ – Camper Van Beethoven

camperI don’t have a whole lot to say about this song other than I really dug it back in college. Also, I think the addition of a violin to any rock song is a wonderful thing.

Up until two minutes ago I thought this was an original song, but I just read that it’s a cover of a song by a band called Status Quo. They formed in the late 60s, after performing under different names for several years, and had a Top 40 hit with ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’ in 1968. And they’re still going, having released their 75th single just last month.

So I guess you learn something every day.

I’ve heard of this group, but don’t think I know much about or from them. This song sounds vaguely familiar and, now that you mention it, I can hear a 60’s vibe to it.. And I agree that violin is a nice touch in a rock song. I particularly like the addition of the violin in many Mellancamp songs.

There’s something – maybe the violin in the background before it gets its solo? – that is a bit grating, like nails on a chalkboard. I have heard of Camper Van Beethoven (what’s the sig. of the name?) but don’t have any association with them at all. I think I’d pass on this song in either incarnation, but maybe Status Quo does more justice to their own song.
