Song of the Day #158: ‘How Can I Tell You?’ – Cat Stevens

catstevensThis is the first tune that really hit me as a bona fide, lay it all on the line, love song love song. I heard it for the first time back in high school and was struck by how completely earnest it is. That’s actually a quality Cat Stevens brings to most of his work, but this song in particular.

I suppose these lyrics describe an unrequited love, or at least a long-distance relationship. In that sense it definitely has an aura of melancholy, which Alex should appreciate because she is always pointing out that I am drawn to the melancholy in music and film.

But there is one section in here that I identify with completely, and not in a melancholy way. “Wherever I am girl, I’m always walking with you, but I look and you’re not there… Whoever I’m with, I’m always talking to you, and I’m sad that you can’t hear.”

Sure, those words are a bit forlorn but they describe my feelings for my wife quite nicely. I have few encounters that I don’t experience through the prism of how I’ll share them with Alex later. My days are filled with mundane moments but also with jokes I can’t wait to share, thoughts I look forward to discussing. I am indeed always walking with and talking to her, no matter where I am or who I’m with, and that’s a powerful and comforting feeling.

How can I tell you that I love you
I love you but I can’t think of right words to say
I long to tell you that I’m always thinking of you
I’m always thinking of you, but my words
Just blow away, just blow away
It always ends up to one thing, honey
And I can’t think of right words to say

Wherever I am girl, I’m always walking with you
I’m always walking with you, but I look and you’re not there
Whoever I’m with, I’m always, always talking to you
I’m always talking to you, and I’m sad that
You can’t hear, sad that you can’t hear
It always ends up to one thing, honey
When I look and you’re not there

I need to know you, need to feel my arms around you
Feel my arms surround you, like a sea around a shore
And each night and day I pray, in hope
That I might find you, in hope that I might
Find you, because hearts can do no more
It always ends up to one thing honey
Still I kneel upon the floor

How can I tell you that I love you
I love you but I can’t think of right words to say
I long to tell you that I’m always thinking of you
I’m always thinking of you…
It always ends up to one thing honey
And I can’t think of right words to say

beautiful song, though I thought that these were feelings you had only for me. Oh well:(

Earnest is such an apt word to describe this song, as well as others I know by Cat Stevens. There is something in his delivery that makes it seem less like a performance intended to be shared with the world than a serenade we’ve somehow been able to eavesdrop on – which is perfect for this blog entry, in fact 😉 Stop blogging and go whisper sweet nothings in your wife’s ear, for crying out loud.

(Meanwhile, I find it fascinating how many anime arcs have been set to great songs on YouTube. Lots of hopeless romantics out there it seems).
