Song of the Day #152: ‘Little Drummer Boy’ – Bing Crosby & David Bowie

bingAs my sister mentioned in the ‘Life on Mars?’ thread, this was the clip that turned her from David Bowie-averse into a fan.

About as unlikely a pair as you can imagine, Bing Crosby and David Bowie joined up in 1977 to film what would become a classic Christmas clip. Crosby wanted to feature a talented young rocker on his yearly Christmas special and Bowie got the call.

The result is a major success on several levels. First and foremost, as a piece of music it is sublime. The blending of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ with ‘Peace on Earth’ is spot on and these two very different men with very different voices complement each other perfectly.

It’s also a lovely piece of acting. The repartee between Bowie and Crosby leading up to the song is charming and corny in exactly the right way. Bowie, who went on to have a solid acting career, slips easily into the homey spirit of Crosby’s special.

Finally, it’s a feel-good moment in musical history… a bridging of the gap between the crooners of the past and the rock-n-rollers of the future. How many young Bowie fans and their Bing Crosby-loving parents watched this clip together and shared a mutual appreciation for each other’s taste? Maybe none. But it’s a nice idea.

It’s a very nice idea, indeed. In fact, when Bowie sings, “I pray my wish will come true for my child and your child, too,” it’s difficult to imagine anyone – fan or not – could avoid being moved by the combination of their voices and the sight of these two men standing side by side, symbolizing all sorts of possibilities.

I love this song and this musical moment. Thank you for featuring it.

Another one of my favorites. It just strikes me as so hopeful and I love the combination of songs and voices.
Thanks for another great entry into this week’s theme.
