Squeeze, like Mark Knopfler, (and isn’t it a good bet that this is the first time those four words have appeared in that order?) is a group I should know better than I do.
I’ve owned three of their albums (East Side Story, Play and a greatest hits collection). I have a strong bias against hits albums, so I sold that one back (even though I liked all the songs). But I’ve never rushed out to pick up their other albums.
By all accounts, East Side Story is their crowning achievement and one of the best Brit-pop albums you’ll find. It was produced by Elvis Costello, reason enough to pick it up. The best-known track is perennial radio staple ‘Tempted,’ and I was, um, tempted to pick that song today because it’s such a breezy classic.
But I’m going with ‘Is That Love’ instead. This is the first Squeeze song I ever really took to, way back in high school when I first got that greatest hits collection.
I don’t know if it’s Chris Difford or Glenn Tilbrook who sings this, but I sure do love the sound of his voice. I put these guys on a line that starts with Lennon and McCartney and continues on to include Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson and Steven Page and Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood. All those duos have the same sort of sweet pop voices that match their sweet pop songs so perfectly.
That last sentence was brought to you by the letters ‘S’ and ‘P.’ Enjoy the song.
I like this one, but I would have preferred Tempted.
This is a great song by a band I miss very much. I even got the Difford/Tillbrook album after Squeeze broke up! I had it on vinyl….
I love the way they set a scene with their lyrics – crisp and conversational. You should get the compilation 45s and Under (probably the one you sold) again – it’s just great fun. Thanks for this one – I love it!
Hi Heather 🙂
We heard this song on the way home from Disney tonight. It’s Tillbrook singing (at least if Sirius can be trusted). This is not one of the Squeeze songs that has made an impression on me in the past, though I’m certain I must have heard it at some point. After two listens tonight, I can say it’s a perfectly pleasant song, so please send plenty salutations to Squeeze (S and P popped by to send sentiments).
I still own the greatest hits–and love almos evry ong on it. And, like you,I probably shouldown more Squeeze.. Very good stuff, indeed.
