Song of the Day #4,907: ‘Hello It’s Me’ – Todd Rundgren

Singer-songwriter and producer Todd Rundgren has been eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 1996, but wasn’t nominated for the first time until 2019. He failed to get in on that ballot, and again in 2020, but finally made the cut this year.

Rundgren’s inclusion feels overdue, especially as the Hall shifts its definition of “rock & roll” to account for the emergence of hip-hop in the 20th century. Here’s an old-school pop-rock artist who has been churning out creative, influential records since 1970. He’s exactly the kind of talent who fits the traditional mold of the Hall of Fame.

Song of the Day #2,837: ‘We Gotta Get You a Woman’ – Todd Rundgren

todd_rundgren_runtThe 1970 album Runt is widely considered Todd Rundgren’s solo debut, though technically it was recorded by a band also called Runt. That band was essentially a Rundgren solo project, though, so it’s all semantics.

I only recently stopped confusing Todd Rundgren with Ted Nugent, so I’m very much in the dark about the man’s career. But everything of his I’ve heard suggests I should be a fan.

Song of the Day #1,559: ‘I Saw the Light’ – Todd Rundgren

I have to make an embarrassing confession. For years I’ve confused Todd Rundgren with Ted Nugent.

When I’ve read favorite artists of mine such as Ben Folds name Rundgren as an influence, I’ve thought “Jesus… the gun nut who basically threatened to kill Barack Obama a few months ago? He must have really gone downhill.”

But no, Rundgren isn’t a psycho fascist. He’s a singer-songwriter-producer who released his most popular material in the early 70s but has had a prolific career that’s still humming along.
