#8 – Tigerlily – Natalie Merchant

The Decades series offer up two distinct pleasures. One is discovering music that passed me by at the time, and the other is rediscovering music I haven’t listened to for years.

Natalie Merchant’s solo debut, Tigerlily, was a lovely, low-key collection from an artist who had released several strong albums with the alternative band 10,000 Maniacs. This record didn’t have the jangly college radio appeal of her work with the band, but it was resonant in a whole different way.

Song of the Day #3,333: ‘Wonder’ – Natalie Merchant

Today marks a numerical milestone for the blog: my 3,333rd post. The occasion prompted me to go back and look at the 1,111th and 2,222nd posts.

Song of the Day #1,111 was Christina Aguilera’s ‘Hurt’ and came during a week in which I wrote about each of The Voice‘s judges during its inaugural season (way back in 2011). Too bad that post didn’t fall on November 11, or it could have been Song #1,111 on 11/11/11.

Song of the Day #1,731: ‘Carnival’ – Natalie Merchant

natalie_merchant_tigerlilySomehow I made it through 1,730 Songs of the Day without once featuring a solo Natalie Merchant track.

I guess that’s not completely surprising given that Merchant’s solo career isn’t (wasn’t?) exactly earth-shattering, and in my defense I have featured three 10,000 Maniacs songs, but it does feel like an oversight.
