Song of the Day #3,166: ‘A Song To Sing’ – Hanson

hanson_get_the_girl_backEvery few years I remind my readers that I have a soft spot for the band Hanson, particularly their 2000 album This Time Around. This time, the Random iTunes Fairy did the honors.

Scoff all you want, but if you haven’t listed to this infectious batch of power pop and melodic ballads, do yourself a favor and give it a try. Lead singer Taylor Hanson, in particular, is a true talent. In 2009, he formed the supergroup Tinted Windows with another wickedly good pop songwriter, Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, and members of Cheap Trick and Smashing Pumpkins.

Song of the Day #959: ‘If Only’ – Hanson

No matter how secure you are in your musical taste, there’s no getting around the fact that it’s uncool to like certain things.

I believe the surest test of that coolness factor is how comfortable you’d be if you pulled up to a stoplight with your windows open and Song X blaring from your speakers then turned to your left and saw another driver (let’s say an attractive member of the opposite sex) looking back at you and getting an earful of your selected tune.

Song of the Day #296: ‘This Time Around’ – Hanson

hansonOf all the guilty pleasures in my collection, the one that requires the most self-confidence for me to stand up and admit to loving is definitely Hanson’s This Time Around.

Now, to be honest, I reject the concept of guilty pleasures. If I like something, I like it… no guilt involved. I think what that phrase really implies is a degree of shame because you like something that “cool” people really shouldn’t like. But I reject that concept as well, because the way I see it, if you reject this album because of the age and appearance of the people who wrote and performed it, that betrays how uncool you really are.
