Throwing back to the week of March 14, 1976, sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 is a classic disco doo-wop song that returned its legendary group to the #1 spot for the first time in more than a decade.

The Four Seasons had four #1 hits between 1962 and 1964 — ‘Sherry,’ ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry,’ ‘Walk Like a Man,’ and ‘Rag Doll,’ doo-wop hits that made splendid use of Frankie Valli’s falsetto. Another six singles made it into at least the top 20.

Song of the Day #5,874: ‘Rag Doll’ – The Four Seasons

The week of August 1, 1964, found The Beatles atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘A Hard Day’s Night.’ This was the fifth of seven #1s the Fab Four would have in a one-year period.

The runner-up that week was a song that was in the top spot the previous week, looking down at The Beatles at #2. The Four Seasons’ ‘Rag Doll,’ a pop/doo-wop classic, gave the band their fourth chart-topper.

Song of the Day #5,741: ‘Dawn (Go Away)’ – The Four Seasons

The week of March 21, 1964, saw The Beatles dominating the top of the Billboard Hot 100. ‘She Loves You‘ and ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand‘ occupied the #1 and #2 spots, respectively, and a re-release of ‘Please Please Me‘ — which had bombed in the U.S. a year earlier — made it to #3.

In the #4 slot that week was ‘Dawn (Go Away)’ by The Four Seasons, a song that peaked at #3 during a six-week stint in the top ten. During that span, it was never topped by anything but a Beatles song.
