Song of the Day #4,420: ‘the last great american dynasty’ – Taylor Swift

A couple of weeks ago, I promised to write more about folklore, the surprise new release from Taylor Swift. Well, this week I’ll keep my word by ranking the album’s 16 tracks in order of my preference.

First, let me say up front that folklore is among the best work Swift has ever released. It’s either #1 or #2 on my ranked list of her albums (last year’s Lover claimed the top spot when I published that ranking back in March).

Song of the Day #4,405: ‘Cardigan’ – Taylor Swift

By some cosmic coincidence, I had a Taylor Swift song scheduled yesterday as a Random Weekend selection. It’s a coincidence because, as the world knows by now, Swift dropped a surprise album — folklore — just a day earlier.

The random song was ‘Sad Tragic Beautiful’ from the 2012 album Red, and I did not have kind things to say about it. In fact, I called it her worst song.

Keeping that post up in light of Swift’s new album release felt particularly tone deaf, so I shuffled some things around.

Song of the Day #4,270: ‘Death By a Thousand Cuts’ – Taylor Swift

Continuing my ranking of Taylor Swift’s albums…

#1 – Lover – 2019

The more time I’ve spent with Taylor Swift’s 2019 Lover, the clearer it is to me that this is her very best album. That it is also her newest bodes very well for future releases.

Lover was teased as a blend of pre- and post-pop Taylor, and on a surface level it fulfills that promise. Most of it is less overtly poppy than 1989 or Reputation, but the production does have an edge and sheen that wasn’t present in her earlier work.
