Billboard’s #11 song of 2023 belongs to Sam Smith and Kim Petras, whose ‘Unholy’ broke a lot of ground for non-binary and transgender performers.
The catchy dance-pop track marked a departure for Smith, known primarily for their slow, sad ballads. Petras is a Los Angeles-based German singer-songwriter who was two years into her first record contract when she delivered this hit and went from relative anonymity to a chart-topping, award-winning artist.
Continuing our march through the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, we arrive at #6 and Sam Smith’s heartbreak ballad ‘Too Good at Goodbyes.’
I haven’t liked a Sam Smith song yet, and this one isn’t an exception. Mostly it’s because I find his voice grating, which I know sounds funny coming from a guy who loves Bob Dylan, Rufus Wainwright and Morrissey. I also find his songs quite generic, which is where those guys have him beat.
Taylor Swift sits at the #6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with the juggernaut that is ‘Shake It Off.’ It’s upsetting that a song this bad is Swift’s biggest hit.
At #7 is Sam Smith with ‘I’m Not the Only One.’ Smith had a big 2014, his ‘Stay With Me‘ dominating the charts for weeks.
I don’t like that song and I don’t like this one. I don’t like Sam Smith. I do not like him, Sam I Am.
At #7 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 is ‘Latch,’ a dance track by British DJ duo Disclosure that features vocals by Sam Smith. This is Smith’s second appearance in the top ten.
Oddly, the video for this song has more anti-gay comments than that of Smith’s own ‘Stay With Me.’ I guess the gay couple in this clip is more front and center, but they’re also a couple of hot lesbians, which I thought was cool even for the Neanderthals.
I’m back, after a two-week hiatus for which I offer my deepest apologies. Who knew that our nation’s capital had inspired such a horrible collection of songs? Somebody with talent should get to D.C. right away and pen something of quality.
