Before I get to my alternate universe candidates for Song of the Summer, I want to share the song TikTok crowned with that title for both the U.S. and worldwide.
The winner is a 10-year-old dance pop track by English singer-songwriter Jess Glynne. ‘Hold My Hand’ was a #1 hit in the UK in 2015 while peaking at #86 on the Billboard Hot 100. So how did this seemingly forgotten song dominate this summer on TikTok?
In Billboard’s 11th position is the most interesting song of the list so far.
‘Rather Be,’ by the British band Clean Bandit, mixes house beats with classical instruments and a soulful vocal into a catchy concoction that reminds me a bit of Moby during the 30 minutes when he was big.
From what I can tell, Clean Bandit provides the instrumental backdrop and recruits guest vocalists (in this case, a woman named Jess Glynne).
