Song of the Day #4,592: ‘Eyes Wide Open’ – Gotye

A couple of years ago I posted a Gotye song during a theme week on future one-hit wonders. I predicted that his ‘Somebody That I Used to Know‘ will stand the test of time but he’ll otherwise be forgotten.

Madison jumped to his defense on that post, calling him one of her favorite artists and calling out the song ‘Eyes Wide Open’ as worthy of hit status. She called it “a painfully relevant song” and said “It’ll never become a hit because people don’t like to think about our flaws as a humanity.”

Song of the Day #3,750: ‘Hearts a Mess’ – Gotye

A key ingredient of one-hit wonder status is how big that one hit is in relation to the rest of the artist’s output. By that standard, the Belgian-born Australian singer-songwriter Gotye is the one-hittiest of one-hit wonders.

Gotye’s marvelous ‘Somebody That I Used to Know‘ topped my own list of the best songs of 2012 and scores of critics’ lists as well. It reached #1 in 26 countries and remains one of the top-selling digital singles of all time. It was massive.

Song of the Day #1,638: ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ – Gotye

gotyeTop Songs of 2012 – #1

I first heard the best song of 2012 toward the end of 2011. Gotye’s video for ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ turned up on a list of great videos and I watched about half of it before deciding not to include it in my year-end collection.

What amazes me is that I listened to the song that first time without really hearing it. A year later, it’s at the top of my ‘best songs’ list but at the time it barely registered.
