My Top Ten Disney Animation Movies
#6 – Lady and the Tramp (1955)

After several films from the modern era, we jump back four decades to Disney’s first golden age for my #6 pick. If the 90s are considered the studio’s strongest decade overall, the 50s are a close second.

I certainly prefer the animation style of those early years to anything the studio produced later. As much as I love the complexity and photorealistic detail of recent films, nothing tops the painterly work of the hand-drawn era.

My Top Ten Disney Animation Movies
#7 – Pocahontas (1995)

The period from 1989 through 1999 is considered Disney’s Renaissance era, when the studio produced some of its most beloved and successful films. A renewed focus on the quality of storytelling, animation, and songwriting resulted in a run of undeniable classics.

Some of those movies made my list while others didn’t (sorry, The Lion King fans). But of all of them, I think the most underappreciated is 1995’s Pocahontas.

My Top Ten Disney Animation Movies
#8 – Tangled (2010)

I’m keeping it in the 21st century for the third pick in a row, though this movie came out a full decade before the last two.

Tangled was originally titled Rapunzel after its long-locked heroine, but studio execs asked for the change because they were afraid young boys would be turned off by another princess movie. That sentiment also resulted in adventurer Flynn Rider becoming a co-lead and the film’s narrator.

My Top Ten Disney Animation Movies
#9 – Encanto (2021)

When Lin-Manuel Miranda gets the right material, the results are breathtaking. I’m not sure what happened on Sony Animation’s Vivo, which I found horrible, but the same year Miranda delivered one of his finest set of songs for Encanto.

This story of a Colombian family gifted with magical powers is beautifully animated and its story is touchingly told, but it’s the music that really elevates it.

Song of the Day #5,994: ‘Lead the Way’ – Jhené Aiko

This year, my movie project was to watch all 64 Disney Animation feature films, from 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to this year’s Moana 2. It took me about 11 months to finish the job.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll count down my top ten of those films and offer up some other lists and thoughts on the catalog as a whole.

In compiling this list, I tried not to give any deference to historical importance. Snow White might be a groundbreaking achievement in the art form, one that paved the path for nine decades of excellence, but it’s a rather dull movie.
