Song of the Day #5,925: ‘I Turn My Camera On’ – Spoon

Continuing my look at the albums of 2005…

I was surprised to discover I’ve only featured one song from Spoon’s 2005 album Gimme Fiction to date, way back in 2008. This is one of those bands, and one of those albums, that I seldom think about but always enjoy.

Gimme Fiction was my introduction to the Austin-based indie band. It’s their fifth studio album and the first to make a wider splash, with today’s song finding some moderate success on radio.

Song of the Day #5,924: ‘Get Together’ – Madonna

Continuing my look at the albums of 2005…

Now that I’ve counted down my favorite albums of 2005, I’m turning my attention to other notable albums from that year. Some of these I know a little bit or a lot, some I didn’t know at all. Each of them made a splash commercially or critically and helped shape the popular music landscape that year.

I wrote about Madonna’s Confessions On a Dance Floor back when I did a deep dive of all of her albums. This one was Madonna’s last Platinum album in the U.S., and the last real triumph of her career.

Song of the Day #5,921: ‘It’s the Night Time’ – Josh Rouse

Concluding a countdown of my favorite albums of 2005…

#1 – Nashville – Josh Rouse

Two years ago I was all set to name this album my #1 of 2004 when I realized I had mis-dated it. I ended up posting Taylor Swift’s latest single as a placeholder instead.

Song of the Day #5,920: ‘Get Him Back’ – Fiona Apple

Continuing a countdown of my favorite albums of 2005…

#2 – Extraordinary Machine – Fiona Apple

Here’s an album that could have been on this list twice.

Fiona Apple’s long-awaited follow-up to 1999’s When the Pawn… was initially recorded with producer Jon Brion before being shelved (either by the record label, the artist herself, or some combination of the two, depending on which version of events you choose to believe).

That “bootleg” version was later leaked in full to rapturous reviews, causing fans to lobby for an official release that never happened.

Song of the Day #5,919: ‘Greyhound Bound for Nowhere’ – Miranda Lambert

Continuing a countdown of my favorite albums of 2005…

#3 – Kerosene – Miranda Lambert

In 2004, Miranda Lambert was a 20-year-old aspiring musician who had just finished third on the reality show Nashville Star. She recorded her first album, Kerosene, and released it the following year to positive reviews but little fanfare.

Nineteen years later, she has won more Country Music Association awards than any other artist in history, with 14 celebrated albums under her belt and a certain spot in the Country (and Rock?) Hall of Fame.
