Song of the Day #6,288: ‘The Subway’ – Chappell Roan

My #1 pick for the alternate universe Song of the Summer is Chappell Roan’s ‘The Subway.’ Roan’s ‘Good Luck, Babe!‘ was in a tight race with Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ as my personal pick for last year’s top summer song, and this year she claims the title.

Roan has been performing ‘The Subway’ live for more than a year but resisted releasing a recorded version at first because she had other singles on the runway and later because she thought it wouldn’t live up to the concert experience. She finally relented and dropped a studio recording on July 31.

Song of the Day #6,152: ‘Pink Pony Club’ – Chappell Roan

Shaboozey sits at #5 on the Hot 100 this week with ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy),’ an absolute juggernaut spending its 54th week on the chart. It has spent 51 of those weeks in the top ten, nine short of the record currently held by Teddy Swims’ ‘Lose Control.’

It just might catch it, but Swims’ track is hanging on and padding the record, sitting at #9 this week.

Song of the Day #5,877: ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ – Chappell Roan

Singer-songwriter Chappell Roan sits at #11 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘Good Luck, Babe!,’ her breakthrough single. I don’t know if this track has the wide popularity to be the Song of the Summer, but it may well be the song of the year.

‘Good Luck, Babe!’ is aimed at a closeted woman who flees a lesbian relationship to hide in the more accepted confines of a straight one. It’s emotionally raw but incredibly catchy, with an alt-pop chorus so slick and sweet I want to listen to it on repeat.
