Throwing back to the week of March 28, 1976, we find Jonnie Taylor atop the Billboard Hot 100 with the sultry funk ballad ‘Disco Lady.’
This song spent a full month at #1 on its way to being named the #3 song of all 1976. It has the distinction of being the first single designated Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Given those bona fides, I’m a bit surprised it’s only vaguely familiar to me. I guess it’s not one of those massive hits that lingered on mainstream radio for years.
‘Disco Lady’ was the first #1 song on the Hot 100 to contain the word “disco.” The only other one would come in October of 1976, when a song called ‘Disco Duck’ topped the chart. I can’t wait for that installment of Throwback Weekends.
