The next inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2025 — Chubby Checker — arguably made it on the strength of just one song.
But what a song! Checker’s ‘The Twist’ was considered the #1 Billboard song of all-time for more than 60 years based on its strength and longevity on the Hot 100. It was only recently eclipsed by The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights.’
Checker’s 1960 recording of ‘The Twist’ was actually a cover of a song released two years earlier by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. Checker was recruited by American Bandstand host Dick Clark to record the song for his show when Ballard wasn’t available. The song became an instant smash.
Checker had another #1 hit a year later with ‘Pony Time.’ That song and ‘The Twist’ were at the forefront of the early 60s dance craze Checker is credited with starting.
Checker has been eligible for the Hall of Fame since the first ceremony in 1986, but last year was his first nomination.
For getting young people off the couch and performing synchronized dances in front of their TV sets, Checker probably deserves his spot in the Rock Hall.
Come on, baby, let’s, do the twist
Come on, baby, let’s do the twist
Take me by my little hand
And go like this
[Chorus]
Ee-yah, twist, baby, baby, twist
Ooh-ooh-ooh-yeah just like this
Come on, little miss, and do the twist
[Verse 2]
My daddy is sleepin’, and Mama ain’t around
Yeah, Daddy’s just sleepin’, and Mama ain’t around
We’re gonna twist ‘n’ twist ‘n’ twist ‘n’
‘Til we tear the house down
[Chorus]
Come on and twist, yeah, baby, twist
Ooh-ooh-ooh-yeah just like this
Come on, little miss, and do the twist, ee-yah
[Verse 3]
Yeah, you should see my little sis
You should see my, my little sis
She really knows how to rock
She knows how to twist
[Chorus]
Come on and twist, yeah, baby, twist
Ooh-ooh-ooh-yeah just like this
Come on, little miss, and do the twist
[Outro]
Yeah, mess all ’round
Yeah, twist all night
