For the second straight year, I’m following up my six weeks of movie posts with a dive into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Let’s call it a new tradition.
I’ve been working backward through Hall of Fame classes, having most recently covered the Class of 2011. But rather than write about 2010 just yet, I’m dedicating the next two weeks to the recently honored Class of 2025.
First up, alphabetically, is the English blues rock Bad Company. And that’s my first surprise of the week, because I had no idea these guys were from the UK.
Bad Company has been eligible for Rock Hall inclusion since 2000 but were never nominated until last year. So they’re first-ballot entrants, but had to wait two and a half decades for the honor.
One reason the band might have had to wait so long is that their heyday was relatively short. Bad Company’s original lineup recorded from 1974-1982, a period that included six studio albums and their most beloved singles (including ‘Bad Company,’ ‘Can’t Get Enough,’ and ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’).
After original lead singer Paul Rodgers left the band in 1982, they reformed with new singers Brian Howe and, later, Robert Hart. Rodgers would eventually return to the lineup for a nostalgia tour in the late 90s and the band has toured and recorded off and on ever since.
The British band has had more success in the United States than in their native UK, particularly since the 80s. They have sold 20 million albums in the U.S. alone, about half their worldwide total.
I’m not very familiar with Bad Company’s discography beyond the biggest hits, so I can’t speak to their worthiness for the Rock Hall. Today’s song, however, is Hall of Fame worthy all by itself.
Baby, when I think about you, I think about love
Darlin’, I don’t live without you and your love
If I had, those golden dreams of my yesterday (Yesterday)
I would wrap you, in their heaven, but they lay dying (Dying, dying) on the way
[Chorus]
Feel like makin’
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love to you
[Verse 2]
Baby, if I think about you, I think about love
Darlin’, if I live without you, I live without love
And if I had the sun and moon and they were shinin’ (Shinin’)
I would give you, both night and day, love satisfyin’
[Chorus]
Feel like makin’
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love to you
[Bridge]
And if I had, those golden dreams of my yesterday (Yesterday)
I would wrap you in the heaven, but they lay dying (Dying, dying) on the way
[Chorus]
Feel like makin’
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love to you
[Outro]
Well, I feel like makin’ love
Well, I feel like makin’ love
Well, I feel like makin’ love, woo
Feel like makin’ love to you, yeah
Well, I feel like makin’ love, yeah
Well, I feel like makin’ love
Well, I feel like makin’ love
Feel like makin’ love to you, ooh
Well, I feel like makin’ love, hmm, woo
Well, I feel like makin’ love, yeah, yeah
Well, I feel like makin’ love, yeah
Feel like makin’ love to you, yeah, yeah
Yeah, feel like makin’ love, love
Well, I feel like makin’ love
