Song of the Day #6,460: ‘December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)’ – The Four Seasons

Throwing back to the week of March 14, 1976, sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100 is a classic disco doo-wop song that returned its legendary group to the #1 spot for the first time in more than a decade.

The Four Seasons had four #1 hits between 1962 and 1964 — ‘Sherry,’ ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry,’ ‘Walk Like a Man,’ and ‘Rag Doll,’ doo-wop hits that made splendid use of Frankie Valli’s falsetto. Another six singles made it into at least the top 20.

The British Invasion and Valli’s launch of a solo career diminished the group’s popularity in the late 60s, though they did manage to release quite a few respectable hits.

But it wasn’t until 1976, with today’s SOTD, that The Four Seasons delivered another smash. ‘December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)’ was written by keyboardist Bob Gaudio, along with his wife, and chronicles the couple’s early courtship.

Drummer Gerry Polci and bassist Don Ciccone sang lead vocals, with Vallie handling the chorus. That duo also handled lead vocals on the accompanying album release, in part to differentiate the sound from Valli’s solo efforts.

I had no idea this song’s full title included ‘December, 1963,’ but I certainly know the track well. It’s a wonderful blend of some of the best sounds of the 60s and 70s.

[Verse 1: Gerry Polci]
Oh, what a night
Late December, back in ’63
What a very special time for me
As I remember, what a night

[Verse 2: Gerry Polci]
Oh, what a night
You know, I didn’t even know her name
But I was never gonna be the same
What a lady, what a night

[Chorus: Frankie Valli]
Oh, I, I got a funny feeling
When she walked in the room
And my, as I recall
It ended much too soon

[Verse 3: Gerry Polci]
(Oh, what a night)
Hypnotizing, mesmerizin’ me
She was everything I dreamed she’d be
Sweet surrender, what a night

[Bridge: Don Ciccone]
And I felt a rush
Like a rolling bolt of thunder
Spinning my head around
And takin’ my body under
(Oh, what a night)

[Chorus: Frankie Valli]
Oh, I got a funny feeling
When she walked in the room
And my, as I recall
It ended much too soon

[Verse 4: Gerry Polci]
(Oh, what a night)
Why’d it take so long to see the light?
Seemed so wrong, but now it seems so right
What a lady, what a night

[Bridge: Don Ciccone]
Oh, I felt a rush
Like a rolling bolt of thunder
Spinning my head around
And takin’ my body under
