Continuing my look at the top songs of 2025…
Rounding out the top ten of the year-end Billboard Hot 100 is Chappell Roan with ‘Pink Pony Club.’ Roan is one of only two solo women in the top ten (the other is Billie Eilish).
In the 11th spot is Morgan Wallen with with one of four songs he landed in the year-end top 20. ‘Love Somebody’ was the second single from his fourth studio album, I’m the Problem. It was his third #1 hit and his first to debut atop the Hot 100.
Wallen is simultaneously a punching bag for elites and the most successful modern recording artist not named Taylor Swift. I tend to side with the elites, but I’ll admit I find all of his songs at the very least listenable and often quite good.
A Morgan Wallen song never challenges you, never paints outside the lines, but it’s solid and catchy and slickly produced. He’s like a down-the-middle action movie with a few good chase scenes — it won’t end up on your year-end list but it does the trick for a night out with a bucket of popcorn in your lap.
