Song of the Day #6,350: ‘Back to Friends’ – Sombr

Returning to my latest installment of ‘What the Kids are Listening To,’ we’ve arrived at #11 on the most recent edition of the Billboard Hot 100.

‘Back to Friends’ is the lead single from singer-songwriter Sombr’s debut album, I Barely Know Her. This is actually Sombr’s 19th single overall, as he’s spent the last four years dropping non-album singles along with an EP. But thanks primarily to TikTok exposure, this is his first release to find a wide audience.

Sombr is the stage name of Shane Michael Boose, a 20-year-old New York City musician who wrote and produced this track along with the rest of his album (he shares production duties with Tony Berg on eight of the ten tracks, but not this one). In this age of mile-long songwriting credits, it’s refreshing to see a one-man shop.

This is the only Sombr song I’ve heard to far, and it’s a good one. I’m hearing definite 1975 vibes here. I’m curious to learn if the rest of the well-reviewed album is in the same vein.

[Verse 1]
Touch my body tender
‘Cause the feeling makes me weak
Kicking off the covers
I see the ceiling while you’re looking down at me

[Chorus]
How can we go back to being friends
When we just shared a bed?
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?

[Verse 2]
It was last December
You were layin’ on my chest
I still remember
I was scared to take a breath
Didn’t want you to movе your head

[Chorus]
How can we go back to being friеnds
When we just shared a bed? (Yeah)
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?

[Bridge]
The devil in your eyes
Won’t deny the lies you’ve sold
I’m holding on too tight
While you let go
This is casual

[Chorus]
How can we go back to being friends
When we just shared a bed? (Yeah)
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?
How can we go back to being friends
When we just shared a bed? (Yeah)
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?

[Outro]
I’m someone you’ve never met (Yeah)
