Song of the Day #6,318: ‘Earn Enough For Us’ – XTC

Continuing my look at the albums of 1986…

I was prepared to put English rock band XTC’s Skylarking on my list of the best 1986 albums, remembering my fondness for it during college. But when I listened to it for the first time in years, maybe the first time in decades, it didn’t grab me the way it used to.

‘Dear God’ still hits hard, but much of the rest is a bit too much. Too strident, too weirdly psychedelic.

Obviously the music hasn’t changed, so what does my reaction say about how I have? Is it as simple as an older man preferring less challenging music? Does that explain my growing affection for yacht rock and 70s cheese, while I turn my back on more bracing and experimental music?

Am I becoming boring and bland in my old age?

Maybe that’s a lot to hang on a tepid reaction to a pop album. Maybe it’s just that Andy Partridge’s voice turns me off now in a way it didn’t 30 years ago. Maybe it’s temporary and I’ll change my mind again one of these days.

Anyway… XTC’s Skylarking. A good 1986 album that’s worth checking out (and maybe worth revisiting if it’s been awhile).

[Chorus]
I’ve been praying all the week through
At home, at work and on the bus
I’ve been praying I can keep you
And to earn enough for us
I can take humiliation
And hurtful comments from the boss
I’m just praying by the weekend
I can earn enough for us

[Verse 1]
Found a house that won’t repair itself with its windows cracking
And a roof held together with holes (Oh)
Just because we’re on the bottom of the ladder
We shouldn’t be sadder than others like us
Who have goals for the betterment of life
Glad that you want to be my wife, but, honest

[Chorus]
I’ve been praying all the week through
At home, at work and on the bus
I’ve been praying I can keep you
And to earn enough for us

[Verse 2]
So you’re saying that we’re gonna be three
Now, a father’s what I’ll be
Don’t get me wrong, I’m so proud
But the belt’s already tight
I’ll get another job at night, but honest

[Chorus]
I can take humiliation
And hurtful comments from the boss
I’m just praying by the weekend
I can earn enough for us

[Verse 1]
Just because we’re on the bottom of the ladder
We shouldn’t be sadder than others like us
Who have goals for the betterment of life
Glad that you want to be my wife, but honest

[Chorus]
I can take humiliation
And hurtful comments from the boss
I’m just praying by the weekend
I can earn enough for us
I can earn enough for us

Interesting! This was one of my favorite albums back in college despite my general aversion to Euro pop. I too haven’t played the record in decades so I don’t know if I would have a similar reaction as you did.

Meanwhile, if the vocal style of the XTC lead singer now bother you, I would think the same would be true of Morrissey.🤪
