Song of the Day #6,303: ‘Poisoned Rose’ – Elvis Costello

Continuing a countdown of my favorite albums of 1986…

#3 – King of America – Elvis Costello

Last week I noted that Blood & Chocolate was one of two great albums Elvis Costello released in 1986. The other, King of America, might be the best thing he’s ever done.

Costello has had a prolific and wide-ranging career, dipping his toe in every conceivable genre and teaming up with a laundry list of unlikely collaborators. But I’ll be boring and say the early to mid-80s remains the high point of his impressive catalog. My three favorite Castello albums — Get Happy!!, Imperial Bedroom, and this one — all came out during that span.

On King of America, Costello gave The Attractions a break and formed a new backing band with T-Bone Burnett — a band made up of Americans to suit the country and Americana songs he was writing.

Costello and Burnett shared production duties, utilizing very few overdubs and relying mostly on acoustic instrumentation. The songs were more emotionally open and less lyrically complex than his usual output.

And what songs! A short list of the album’s best tracks includes ‘Brilliant Mistake,’ ‘Indoor Fireworks,’ ‘I’ll Wear It Proudly,’ ‘American Without Tears,’ ‘Jack of All Parades,’ and ‘Suit of Lights’ — all songs any musician would kill to have written. And the “filler” tracks, mostly blues jams, inject levity and energy into an otherwise melancholy collection.

King of America and Imperial Bedroom were my gateway Elvis Costello albums (a gift from daily commenter Dana, in fact!) and I can’t think of a better introduction to the many things he does well.

[Verse 1]
The poisoned rose that you gave to me
It left me half alive and half in ecstasy
But if half of your love is all I can win
Give me just a fraction but no more medicine

[Verse 2]
The poisoned rose on a Valentine card
That you take straight to the heart
That you call my junkyard
But if all I can do is save pieces of you
The piece of your mind, the piece of your heart
Didn’t tear me apart
Like the poisoned rose I received from you

[Bridge]
I don’t know how we came to grow
Into this very sad affair
Every time we do the decent thing
Somebody spikes the drink
And a single becomes a pair

[Verse 3]
The poisoned rose that you wear at your best
That I keep pressed between the white sheets
Where you lie half undressed
I threw away my shirt and shoes, you looked and I dived in
It’s just you and me now ’cause I threw away the gin
I threw away your alibis and all your worn-out clothes
I threw myself upon the floor but I couldn’t throw away
This poisoned rose
This poisoned rose
This poisoned rose

    You’re welcome!😉

I too feel that King of America and Imperial Bedroom are the two best records Elvis Costello has ever done, and both would likely land on my top 10 albums of all time by any artist.

I highly recommend that anyone who has not heard this album and may be curious as to what all the fuss is about give it a listen.

I’ll put it on my list 😊
