It’s hard for me to consider something a candidate for Song of the Summer if I’ve never heard the name of either the song or the person singing it.
But that’s the case for the #10 song on Billboard’s Song of the Summer chart: Ravyn Lenae’s ‘Love Me Not.’ The pop/R&B banger is the first single from the Chicago singer-songwriter’s sophomore album, Bird’s Eye.
Like so many songs these days, ‘Love Me Not’ owes its popularity to TikTok. Late last year it was uploaded to the platform as a mashup with Solange’s ‘Losing You’ and quickly grew in popularity. On its own, ‘Love Me Not’ has soundtracked hundreds of thousands of TikToks.
I wonder if the user who first introduced the song into the viral stream feels like he or she deserves some sort of compensation. That person did a better job than a team of well-paid marketers. Or maybe it was a well-paid marketer, disguised as a “regular” person, who put it out there.
