Throwing back to the week of September 6, 1955, we find a trio of repeats atop the Billboard singles chart: Mitch Miller’s ‘The Yellow Rose of Texas,’ Pat Boone’s ‘Ain’t That a Shame,’ and Bill Haley & The Comets’ ‘Rock Around the Clock.’
That brings us to #4, ‘Love is a Many Splendored Thing’ by the pop quartet The Four Aces. This was the most popular version of the song, which has been recorded by at least a dozen others. It eventually reached #1.
‘Love is a Many Splendored Thing’ was written for the 1955 movie of the same name and won Best Song at the following year’s Oscars. It later scored a soap opera, also titled Love is a Many Splendored Thing, based on the movie.
This was the second #1 hit for The Four Aces. A year earlier they topped the chart with ‘Three Coins in the Fountain,’ another song that shares its title with a movie and won an Oscar.
I know this song best from the opening scene of Grease, in which a florid orchestral version plays over Danny and Sandy’s summer at the beach.
It’s the April rose
That only grows
In the early Spring
Love is nature’s way of giving
A reason to be living
The golden crown that makes a man a king
Once on a high and windy hill
In the morning mist
Two lovers kissed
And the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart
And taught it how to sing
Yes, true love’s a many splendored thing
Once on a high and windy hill
In the morning mist
Two lovers kissed
And the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart
And taught it how to sing
Yes, true love’s a many splendored thing
This post had me curious as to how many number one songs had the first line identical to the title. Apparently, Google could not provide the exact number, but did offer up several examples. A Reddit post had the most comprehensive list I could find. Notably, today’s SOTD is not listed, but here are several examples, though I’m not sure they were all number 1s (I also excluded single word titles like Yesterday, Kyrie, Michelle, etc…)
