Jason Isbell’s seventh album, Reunions, came out in May 2020 in the early days of Covid. Its air of melancholy nostalgia proved a perfect soundtrack for those uncertain times.
Recorded once again with The 400 Unit, the album finds Isbell digging into his past. “There’s ghosts all over the record,” he said in an interview. “That’s why I called it Reunions, because that’s what a ghost is: reuniting with somebody long enough for them to tell you what you missed the first time around.”
Isbell writes about friends he’s lost, about childhood memories, about his hard path to sobriety, about his wife and his daughter. This is his most personal album and one of his best (somehow, more than half of his albums are “one of his best”).
If I have one nitpick, it’s that the otherwise great opening song ‘What’ve I Done to Help’ stretches to nearly seven minutes through the repetition of the title phrase. It’s the album’s only misstep.
Closing track ‘Letting You Go’ is a personal favorite. It finds him imagining the day his young daughter will grow up and leave home. “It’s easy to see that you’ll get where you’re going,” he sings. “The hard part is letting you go.” I posted that tear-jerker when my oldest daughter turned 18.
‘Dreamsicle’ is another standout. In this one, he reminisces about a childhood saddled with frequent moves and an unreliable father, painting memories that are sad but oh so beautiful.
I guess we’re leaving town again
We’re moving out and moving in
Gotta break the news to all my friends
But they won’t care
They’ll just find another face
To fall behind, to take my place
To run way out past second base
And just stand there
[Chorus]
A dreamsicle on a summer night
In a folding lawn chair
Witch’s ring around the moon
Better get home soon
[Verse 2]
Poison oak to poison ivy
Dirty jokes that blew right by me
Mama curling up beside me
Crying to herself
Why can’t Daddy just come home?
Forget whatever he did wrong
He’s in a hotel all alone
And we need help
[Chorus]
A dreamsicle on a summer night
In a folding lawn chair
I’m still packing up my room
Gotta get home soon
New sneakers on a high school court
And you swore you’d be there
My heart breaking through the springtime
Breaking in June
[Verse 3]
Broken glass and broken vows
I’ll be 18 four years from now
With different friends in a different town
I’ll finally be free
Call you both some holiday
Tell you why I moved away
Say, “Everything’s gonna be okay
You can come see me”
[Chorus]
A dreamsicle on a summer night
In a folding lawn chair
Daddy’s howling at the moon
Better get home soon
Heat lightning in the evening sky
And my mama’s red hair
Hearts breaking through the springtime
Breaking in June
Breaking in June
Breaking in June
While I assume “Letting You Go” remains a favorite, your lament expressed 5 years ago that your daughter would no longer be down the hall was a bit premature.🤪
Ain’t that the truth! The more valid 2020s version of that song should be titled ‘Our New Roommate.’
And aren’t you lucky ❤️
Very lucky! ❤️
As are we!
Looking forward to digging into this album. As i mentioned last week, I’ve heard many of the songs on playlists, but they hit different when you listen to them nestled into their original spot on the album.
