Song of the Day #6,250: ‘Jive Talkin” – Bee Gees

Throwing back to the week of August 16, 1975, we find the Bee Gees atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Jive Talkin’.’ It was the band’s first #1 hit (and first in the top ten) since 1971’s ‘How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.’ They would have seven more over the next four years.

This was the lead single of the album Main Course, the Bee Gees’ first gold album in the U.S. and the start of a massively successful run that made them one of the top-selling acts in history.

The song was originally titled ‘Drive Talking’ as its rhythm was inspired by the sound their car made when crossing Biscayne Bay on the way to record in their Miami studio.

When I last wrote about this album, I described it as the one where the Bee Gees went disco. Reader Rob chimed in and said he thinks it’s better described as 70s R&B. Listening to this song today, I have to agree.

[Chorus]
It’s just your jive talkin’, you’re telling me lies, yeah
Jive talkin’, you wear a disguise
Jive talkin’, so misunderstood, yeah
Jive talkin’, you’re really no good[Verse 1]
Oh, my child, you’ll never know
Just what you mean to me
Oh, my child, you got so much
You gonna take away my energy

[Chorus]
With all your jive talkin’, you’re telling me lies, yeah
Good lovin’ still gets in my eyes
Nobody believe what you say
It’s just your jive talkin’ that gets in the way (Oh my)

[Verse 2]
Oh, my love, you’re so good
Treating me so cruel
There you go with your fancy lies
Leavin’ me lookin’ like a dumbstruck fool

[Chorus]
With all your jive talkin’, you’re telling me lies, yeah
Jive talkin’, you wear a disguise
Jive talkin’, so misunderstood, yeah
Jive talkin’, you just ain’t no good
You know that love talkin’ is all very fine, yeah
Jive talkin’ just isn’t a crime
And if there’s somebody you’ll love till you die
Then all that jive talkin’ just gets in your eye, yeah (Woo)

[Chorus]
Jive talkin’, you’re telling me lies, yeah
Good lovin’ still gets in my eyes
Nobody believe what you say
It’s just your jive talkin’ that gets in the way
You know that love talkin’ is all very fine, yeah
Jive talkin’ just isn’t a crime
And if there’s somebody you’ll love till you die
Then all that jive talkin’ just gets in your eye, yeah, yeah

[Outro]
Oh, jive talkin’
Jive talkin’, yeah
Oh, jive talkin’, yeah

    I assume you meant 1975, not 1974?

I remember this song well, though I had thought it was part of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

Meanwhile, I assume they reworked the lyrics when they changed the title, as I don’t see these lyrics “jiving” with “Drive Talking.”

Oops.. fixed. Yes, this was also on the SNF soundtrack, and the lyrics were rewritten once the title changed.

Always enjoy listening to the Bee Gees
