The week of July 27, 1965, saw a couple of repeats atop the Billboard Hot 100: The Rolling Stones’ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction‘ and Herman’s Hermits’ ‘I’m Henry VIII, I Am.’
In third place that week was the titular theme song from the film What’s New Pussycat?, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and performed by Tom Jones. Jones was reluctant to sing this crazy tune but was convinced by Bacharach that it could work only with a boisterous voice like his.
‘What’s New Pussycat?’ was nominated for Best Song at the Academy Awards but lost to ‘The Shadow of Your Smile,’ the love theme from The Sandpiper, an Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton film I actually just watched a week ago.
The funniest story about ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ no doubt belongs to comedian John Mulaney, whose routine about playing it on a diner jukebox is well worth watching.
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
Pussycat, Pussycat
I’ve got flowers
And lots of hours
To spend with you
So go and powder your cute little pussycat nose!
Pussycat, Pussycat
I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat nose!
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
Pussycat, Pussycat
You’re so thrilling
And I’m so willing
To care for you
So go and make up your big little pussycat eyes!
Pussycat, Pussycat
I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat eyes!
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
Pussycat, Pussycat
You’re delicious
And if my wishes
Could all come true
I’ll soon be kissing your sweet little pussycat lips!
Pussycat, Pussycat
I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat lips!
You and your pussycat eyes!
You and your pussycat nose!
Such a schmaltzy song, as is Henry VIII, to be vying for chart space with the iconic “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.” The John Mulaney routine, which I have seen before, however, is hysterical.
ah, to be a fly in that diner. 🙂
my thoughts exactly Dana about ” I can’t get no satisfaction “
just listened to the routine 😂😂
