Song of the Day #6,192: ‘One Bad Apple’ – The Osmonds

The next artist on the ‘most forgotten’ list is Gary Lewis & the Playboys, but I’ve featured them on the blog a couple of times recently so they won’t have the honor today.

Instead, we come to the only 70s band near the top of the list: The Osmonds. To be fair, I’m sure people remember Donny (and Marie) Osmond to a greater degree than their family band. But the singing group that had 10 Top 40 hits in the first half of the 70s… not so much.

The Osmonds are the first act on this list to score a #1 single. ‘One Bad Apple’ debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 in January of 1971 and stayed there for five weeks. Originally written for the Jackson 5, it was passed on in favor of ‘ABC.’ I guess that worked out for both bands.

The song sure sounds like the Jackson 5, especially when Donny chimes in with the Michael part.

After The Osmonds’ successful early 70s run, Donny shifted his focus to a solo career and hosted a TV show with sister Marie. That didn’t bode well for the band, and the hits dried up, even as they branched out into country and hard rock.

They continued performing for decades with different lineups and different names (oldest brother Alan fathered eight sons, who performed as The Osmond Boys in the 80s). Wayne Osmond, the second oldest brother, died of a stroke earlier this year at just 73.

I can tell you’ve been hurt
By that look on your face, girl
Some guy brought sad
Into your happy world

You need love
But you’re afraid that if you give in
Someone else will come along
And sock it to you again

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl
Oh, give it one more try
Before you give up on love

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl
Oh, I don’t care what they say
I don’t care what you heard

I could make you happy, baby
Satisfy you, too
But how can I
If you won’t give me a chance to prove my love to you?
Won’t you just give me one chance?
I’ll give you my guarantee That you won’t be hurt again

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl
Oh, give it one more try
Before you give up on love

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl
Oh, I don’t care what they say
I don’t care what you heard now

I’ve been noticing you, baby
For a long, long time
And I’m not ashamed to tell the world
That you really messed up my mind

Girl, to me you’re like a dream come true
I’d rather hurt myself
Than to ever hurt you

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl
Oh, give it one more try
Before you give up on love, girl

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl
Oh, I don’t care what they say
I don’t care what you heard now

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl

Hard to imagine the Osmonds doing hard rock!

This song always reminded me of the J5, and now I know why. Thank you for the back story! I especially like how Donny sings his hook phrases (“Oh, give it one more try/Before you give up on love”) with a different musical emphasis each time it comes around. I had no idea they had so many hits in the early 70s. And I LOVE the photo of them standing in a ditch in a field. Absurd/hip yet also country/Mormon…
