Jerry Butler might be remembered as a singer with The Impressions, a vocal group inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Butler and Curtis Mayfield shared lead vocals in the band’s early years before Butler left the group to embark on a solo career.
More likely, The Impressions are only slightly more remembered than Butler himself, who comes in third on the ranked list of most forgotten artists.
Butler landed 13 hits in the Billboard Hot 100, and dozens more on the Pop and R&B charts. His most successful hits were 1960’s ‘He Will Break Your Heart,’ 1969’s ‘Only the Strong Survive,’ and 1964’s ‘Let It Be Me,’ a duet with Betty Everett (a cover of the Everly Brothers hit).
I actually mentioned Butler in a recent Throwback Weekend post when writing about Tony Orlando & Dawn’s hit cover version of today’s SOTD.
Butler had a nearly 30-year career as a local politician in Chicago while still performing on the side. He died earlier this year at 85.
If he did, he wouldn’t break your heart
He don’t love you like I love you
He’s trying to tear us apart
Fare thee well
I know you’re leaving
For the new love that you’ve found
The handsome guy that you’ve been dating
Whoa, I got a feeling he’s gonna put you down, ’cause
He don’t love you like I love you
If he did, he wouldn’t break your heart
He don’t love you like I love you
He’s trying to tear us apart
Now he uses all the great quotations
He says the things I wish I could say
Whoa, but he’s had so many rehearsals
Girl, to him that’s just another play
But wait
And when the final act is over
And you’re left standing all alone
When he takes his bow and makes his exit
Whoa, I’ll be there to take you home
‘Cause he don’t love you and he never will like I love you
‘Cause if he did, he wouldn’t break your heart
Whoa. oh, oh, oh
He don’t love you…
Neither Jimmy Butler nor the Impressions are as familiar to me as Curtis Mayfield. I’m curious what merited the Impressions’ induction into the Rock Hall.
I can’t say that I know him but I do remember this song 🤷♀️
