The seventh and eighth songs to reach #1 posthumously were both rap features.
In 2004, Soulja Slim appeared on a Juvenile song called ‘Slow Motion,‘ released several months after Soulja’s shooting death the previous November. He also co-wrote the track.
That makes three shootings in a row (following John Lennon and The Notorious B.I.G.) for these posthumous hitmakers, after two plane crashes (Otis Redding, Jim Croce) and a drug overdose (Janis Joplin). Ah, the life of a rock star.
The eighth posthumous chart-topper is the only one who died of (somewhat) natural causes. Producer/rapper Static Major was hospitalized for a medical condition and bled to death when an improperly inserted catheter was removed from his neck. Jesus.
Static reached #1 when his collaboration with Lil Wayne, ‘Lollipop,’ jumped up the charts two weeks later. It’s a bit odd that the death of a relative unknown boosted a single by a bigger name to that degree, but considering this is the only Lil Wayne song to ever reach #1, it appears to be the case.
Finally, the ninth and most recent posthumous #1 belongs to rapper XXXTentacion, whose appropriately named ‘Sad!’ topped the chart in the immediate aftermath of his murder (another shooting).
I hope the next song to posthumously reach #1 doesn’t do so because of a murder (or a plane crash or drug overdose). I hope it comes when some legendary artist passes away quietly in his or her sleep and the world acknowledges the passing by streaming a beloved hit.
