A trio of songs I mentioned a couple of weeks ago were still crowding the top of the Hot 100 the week of June 8, 1985: Tears For Fears’ ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World,’ Wham!’s ‘Everything She Wants,’ and Harold Faltermeyer’s ‘Axel F.’
At #4 that week was Billy Ocean’s ‘Suddenly,’ the title track of his fifth — and most successful — album.
That album produced a #1 hit in ‘Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)‘ and a #2 hit in ‘Loverboy.’ This romantic ballad peaked at #4, not quite as high a showing as those upbeat tracks, but impressive nonetheless.
I used to think that love was just a fairy tale
Until that first hello, until that first smile
But if I had to do it all again
I wouldn’t change a thing
Cause this love is everlasting
[Chorus]
Suddenly, life has new meaning to me
There’s beauty up above
And things we never take notice of
You wake up, and suddenly you’re in love
Ooh yeah
[Verse 2]
Girl you’re everything a man could want and more
One thousand words are not enough
To say what I feel inside
Holding hands as we walk along the shore
Never felt like this before
Now you’re all I’m living for
[Chorus]
Suddenly, life has new meaning to me
There’s beauty up above
And things we never take notice of
You wake up, and suddenly you’re in love
[Bridge]
Each day
I pray, this love affair would last forever
Oh hoh
[Chorus]
Suddenly, life has new meaning to me
There’s beauty up above
And things we never take notice of
You wake up, suddenly you’re in love
[Outro]
Ooh
There’s beauty up above
And things we never take notice of
You wake up, suddenly you’re in love
Ooh…
While the 80s had some great music, it was also the decade of the power ballad, which was not my favorite genre. Today’s song is an example of that. Didn’t like it then and it hasn’t aged well imo.
