Shaboozey sits at #5 on the Hot 100 this week with ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy),’ an absolute juggernaut spending its 54th week on the chart. It has spent 51 of those weeks in the top ten, nine short of the record currently held by Teddy Swims’ ‘Lose Control.’
It just might catch it, but Swims’ track is hanging on and padding the record, sitting at #9 this week.
At #6 is Chappell Roan’s ‘Pink Pony Club,’ a song that has taken a long road to the top ten. It was first released as a single in 2020 and later included on Roan’s 2023 album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.
As Roan’s popularity increased, the track moved its way up the chart, helped by live performances on Saturday Night Live and at the Grammys. It recently peaked at #4, giving Roan her third top five hit.
‘Pink Pony Club’ is about a Tennessee woman who takes a job at a gay club in West Hollywood, against the wishes of her conservative mother.
I know you wanted me to stay
But I can’t ignore the crazy visions of me in L.A.
And I heard that there’s a special place
Where boys and girls can all be queens every single day
[Refrain]
I’m having wicked dreams of leaving Tennessee
Hear Santa Monica, I swear it’s calling me
Won’t make my mama proud, it’s gonna cause a scene
She sees her baby girl, I know she’s gonna scream
[Pre-Chorus]
“God, what have you done?
You’re a pink pony girl, and you dance at the club,” oh mama
I’m just having fun
On the stage in my heels, it’s where I belong, down at the
[Chorus]
Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep on dancing at the
Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep on dancing down in
West Hollywood, I’m gonna keep on dancing at the
Pink Pony Club, Pink Pony Club
[Verse 2]
I’m up and jaws are on the floor
Lovers in the bathroom and a line outside the door
Black lights and a mirrored disco ball
Every night’s another reason why I left it all
[Refrain]
I thank my wicked dreams, a year from Tennessee
Oh, Santa Monica, you’ve been too good to me
Won’t make my mama proud, it’s gonna cause a scene
She sees her baby girl, I know she’s gonna scream
[Pre-Chorus]
“God, what have you done?
You’re a pink pony girl, and you dance at the club,” oh mama
I’m just having fun
On the stage in my heels, it’s where I belong, down at the
[Chorus]
Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep on dancing at the
Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep on dancing down in
West Hollywood, I’m gonna keep on dancing at the
Pink Pony Club, Pink Pony Club
[Bridge]
Don’t think I’ve left you all behind
Still love you and Tennessee, you’re always on my mind
And mama, every Saturday
I can hear your Southern drawl a thousand miles away, saying
[Pre-Chorus]
“God, what have you done?
You’re a pink pony girl, and you dance at the club,” oh mama
I’m just having fun
On the stage in my heels, it’s where I belong, down at the
[Chorus]
Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep on dancing at the
Pink Pony Club, I’m gonna keep on dancing down in
West Hollywood, I’m gonna keep on dancing at the
Pink Pony Club, Pink Pony Club
[Outro]
I’m gonna keep on dancing
I’m gonna keep on dancing
All 3 of the songs mentioned are catchy as hell and deserve their long run on the charts.
And it’s also way cool that Chappell Roan started as a SofarSounds artist. Gives hope to a certain someone other talented artist I know…😉
This is one of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time in terms of interesting chords and production with a soaring chorus that you can’t help but feel captivated by! Her SNL performance was electric and so impressive to see an entire crowd of people singing along at the top of their lungs to the hook.
I was a latecomer to Chappell Roan and for a while was somewhat resentful that this artist that had captured so many’s hearts was one I hadn’t had an entry way point into. I must confess I still have not done any sort of deep dive to her breakthrough album or any of her older work. However, every single hit I’ve heard makes sense as a hit and shows that she’s a very talented artist.
I agree with frequent commenter Dana Gallup, that all 3 of the songs you mentioned are great and serve as reaffirmation that popular music at its best are just fantastic songs that the masses can rally around. This past year and some of this past week’s entries have been a demonstration in that!
