Throwing back to the week of May 3, 1955, we find two repeats atop the Billboard singles chart: Perez Prado’s ‘Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White)’ at #1 and Bill Hayes’ ‘The Ballad of Davy Crockett’ at #2.
In the third spot was a song I mentioned a few weeks back in another Throwback Weekend post. The featured song was Georgia Gibbs’ ‘Tweedle Dee,’ and I noted that it was one of two tracks Gibbs had in the top ten at the time. The other was ‘Dance With Me Henry (Wallflower).’
Well, by May 3 the songs had switched places, and it was ‘Dance With Me Henry (Wallflower)’ at #3 while ‘Tweedle Dee’ came in at #9.
Like ‘Tweedle Dee,’ this song is a cover of a popular R&B track by a Black artist (a Gibbs specialty). The song was originally recorded as ‘The Wallflower’ by a 17-year-old Etta James.
Gibbs’ version features an uncredited vocal by Thurl Ravenscroft, who I previously mentioned in a post about Rosemary Clooney’s This Ole House.’ To quote myself from back then, in addition to singing backup on lots of songs like this one, “Ravenscroft is the voice of Tony the Tiger, the singer of ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,’ and a featured vocalist on a number of Disneyland and Disney World rides, including The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.”
You gotta dance with me, Henry (all right baby)
Dance with me, Henry (don’t mean maybe)
Rock with me, Henry (any old time)
Talk to me, Henry (don’t change your mind)
Dance with me, Henry (all right)
You better dance while the music goes on
Roll on, roll on, roll on
While the cats are ballin’
You better stop your stallin’
It’s intermission in a minute
So you better get with it
Dance with me, Henry
You better dance while the music goes on
Roll on, roll on, roll on
Ooh wee
Henry, you ain’t movin’ me
You better feel that boogie beat
And get the lead out of your feet
You gotta dance with me, Henry
Dance with me, Henry
Rock with me, Henry
Talk to me, Henry
Dance with me, Henry
You better dance while the music goes on
Roll roll roll
Roll roll roll
Rock rock rock
Rock rock rock
Roll roll roll
Roll on, roll on, roll on
Rock with me, Henry (all right baby)
Dance with me, Henry (don’t mean maybe)
Rock with me, Henry (any old time)
Dance with me, Henry (don’t change your mind)
Jump with me, Henry (all right)
You better dance, dance
While the music goes on
Roll on
Roll on
Roll on
Roll on
Rock
I’m unfamiliar with this song, but like the Etta James’ version better, even though it doesn’t have Tony the Tiger.😉
I kinda like Henry’s voice better in both versions 🤷♀️
