Concluding my look at the albums of 1976…
The final 1976 album I listened to was Marvin Gaye’s I Want You, the singer-songwriter’s 13th studio album. This record followed 1971’s What’s Going On and 1973’s Let’s Get It On, two of Gaye’s most successful albums, and was viewed at the time as a letdown.
I Want You, co-written and co-produced by Gaye with Leon Ware, shifted his sound a little more toward disco. It also doubled down on the sexual themes of Let’s Get It On — this is an excessively horny album.
Though most of the songs originated with Ware, Gaye shifted the focus to his burgeoning love affair with Janis Hunter, whom he married a year later. He met Hunter when she was just 17 and he was married to Anna Gordy (sister of Motown CEO Barry Gordy). So, yeah, pretty messy.
Hunter was reportedly in the studio during the album’s recording, but I don’t know if it’s her contributing the sounds of a woman in ecstasy that pop up on at least a couple of tracks.
This is a richly textured, sensual album, one that has likely scored thousands of babymaking sessions.
It’s also a sexy way to wrap up my look at 1976. Stay tuned in the coming months for the next installment of Decades, which will take us to 1986.
I want you (And I want you) — the right way (The right way, babe)
I want you (Yes, I do)
But I want you to want me too (Want me too)
Want you to want me, baby (And I want you to do right, baby)
Just like I want you (Woo)
[Verse 1]
Oh, I give you all the love I want in return, sweet darling
But half a love is all I feel
Ooh, it’s too bad, it’s just too sad, you don’t want me now
But I’m going to change your mind, someway, somehow, oh baby
[Chorus]
I want you — the right way
I want you
But I want you to want me too
I want you to want me, baby
Just like I want you
Ooh, ooh
[Verse 2]
This one way love is just a fantasy, oh sugar
To share is precious, pure and fair, ooh
Don’t play with something you should cherish for life, oh baby
Don’t you want to care? Ain’t it lonely out there?
[Chorus]
I want you (I want you) — the right way (Want you, baby)
I want you
But I want you to want me too
I want you to want me, baby (Oh, I want you to get down, baby)
When I get down with you, yeah, darlin’, oh, ooh (Just like I want you)
[Outro]
Get down, baby, woo
Have mercy
Listen precious, I wanted you
For a long time
I wanted you
More than you can imagine
Oh baby, so fine, ow!
I want you – the right way, baby
I want you, baby
But I want you to want me too, baby
Gotta, gotta, gotta love me, sugar
Oh, the way that I love you
Woooo, I want you
Thanks for the look at 1976 albums. I’m REALLY looking forward to the 1986 installment of the Decades series. I was probably never more into music than I was that year- my freshman year at college.
