The Supremes’ ‘Stop! In the Name of Love‘ rules the Billboard Hot 100 the week of March 23, 1965. Right behind it was ‘Can’t You Heat My Heartbeat’ by Herman’s Hermits.
This was the British group’s first appearance in the top ten (and only their third single). Nine of their next eleven releases would repeat the feat, including two that reached #1 (‘Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter’ and ‘I’m Henry VIII, I Am’).
These goofy little bubblegum beat tracks made Herman’s Hermits one of the most successful bands to ride the British Invasion wave started by The Beatles. It also made them one of the most forgettable. You don’t hear any of these tracks resurfacing anymore.
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
In the car or walking down the highway
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
When you move up closer to me
I get a feelin’ that’s ooh-wee (ah)
Can’t you hear the poundin’ of my heartbeat
‘Cause you’re the one I love
You’re the one I love
When I feel you put your arms around me
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
Then I’m glad, I’m mighty glad I found you
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
When you asked me to meet your ma
I knew that, baby, we’d be going far (ah)
Can’t you hear the poundin’ of my heartbeat?
‘Cause you’re the one I love
You’re the one I love
All my friends are cryin’ out to meet you
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
Now’s the time to go and see the preacher
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
Wedding bells are gonna chime
Baby baby, you’re gonna be mine (ah)
Can’t you hear the poundin’ of my heartbeat
‘Cause you’re the one I love, you’re the one I love
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
Baby baby, can’t you hear my heartbeat?
Over twenty years ago, I saw lead singer Peter Noone perform at some casino theater in Atlantic City. I was with my 20 year older brother, who obviously knew Herman’s Hermits far better than me, but I was actually surprised how many of their songs I knew and actually kinda liked.
I remember singing along to Henry and Mrs Brown but don’t know this song
