The final inductee I’ll cover from the supersized Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2012 is a twofer. Both Small Faces and Faces were inducted as one, 30 years after their initial eligibility.
Small Faces was an English pop band popular during the mid to late 60s, considered one of the earliest examples of Britpop. When founding member Steve Marriott left to form Humble Pie, the remaining members teamed up with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to form Faces. That lineup released four albums between 1970 and 1973 before disbanding. A few years later, the original Small Faces lineup reunited and they released two more albums under that name.
Given that history, it makes sense that the two acts were considered one for Hall of Fame purposes. That said, the switch from Marriott to Stewart as both lead vocalist and primary songwriter means the bands’ output is quite different. Faces has a more rock/blues sound compared to the pop and psychedelia of Small Faces.
Faces is also responsible for ‘Ooh La La,’ which scores the ending of one of my all-time favorite movies, Rushmore, so I have to give them credit for that.
I wasn’t familiar with any of the Small Faces songs I listened to, and with only a couple by Faces, but I believe this Rock Hall induction was based primarily on both bands’ influence. Small Faces were also responsible for a few UK hits, even if they didn’t cross over to this side of the pond.
Over bridge of sighs
To rest my eyes in shades of green
Under dreamin’ spires
To Itchycoo Park, that’s where I’ve been
[Pre-Chorus 1]
What did you do there?
I got high
What did you feel there?
Well I cried
But why the tears there?
I’ll tell you why
[Chorus]
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
[Bridge]
I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun
[Verse 2]
I tell you what I’ll do (What will you do?)
I’d like to go there now with you
You can miss out school (Won’t that be cool)
Why go to learn the words of fools?
[Pre-Chorus 2]
What will we do there?
We’ll get high
What will we touch there?
We’ll touch the sky
But why the tears then?
I’ll tell you why
[Chorus]
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
[Bridge]
I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun
[Outro]
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
Ha! It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful
I’ve never heard of Small Faces, Faces or today’s SOTD, but I’ll take your word for the merit of their induction into the Rock Hall.
