Song of the Day #6,102: ‘Scar Tissue’ – Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were first eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 and were nominated that year but didn’t make the cut. They were passed over for a nomination in 2011 before being inducted the following year into the class of 2012.

The Los Angeles-based alternative funk rock band has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide since their 1984 debut. Five of their 13 studio albums have gone multi-platinum, with 1999’s Californication and 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik leading the way with more than 8 million sales each.

They are more of an album artist, like most big rock bands, but they did manage to land three singles in the Billboard Top Ten (‘Under the Bridge’ at #2, ‘Scar Tissue’ at #9, and ‘Dani California’ at #6).

Lead singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea have been with the band since its 1983 inception. Drummer Chad Smith joined in 1988. Guitarist John Frusciante has had a more sporadic run, starting with the band in ’88 but leaving for several years on two separate occasions. The band’s Rock Hall induction ceremony fell during one of those hiatuses and he didn’t attend the ceremony.

I’m unfamiliar with most of the Chili Peppers’ albums, but I did listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik quite a bit in my early 20s. It’s a great album, with stellar musicianship and a rap and funk infused rock sound that pushed back against the dominant grunge movement.

Though I didn’t keep up with their output, I have zero pushback to them being included in the Hall. They’ve had commercial success, critical acclaim, longevity, and influence — most Rock Hall acts have some combination of those attributes, but few have all four.

[Verse 1]
Scar tissue that I wish you saw
Sarcastic mister know-it-all
Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
‘Cause with the birds I’ll share

[Chorus]
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing

[Verse 2]
Ah, push me up against the wall
Young Kentucky girl in a push-up bra
Ah, fallin’ all over myself
To lick your heart and taste your health, ’cause

[Chorus]
With the birds (Share this lone—), I’ll share this lonely viewing
With the birds (Share this lone—), I’ll share this lonely viewing
With the birds (Share this lone—), I’ll share this lonely viewing

[Verse 3]
Blood loss in a bathroom stall
A southern girl with a scarlet drawl
I wave good-bye to Ma and Pa
‘Cause with the birds I’ll share

[Chorus]
With the birds (Share this lonely), I’ll share this lonely viewing
With the birds (Share this lonely), I’ll share this lonely viewing

[Verse 4]
Soft-spoken with a broken jaw
Step outside but not to brawl and
Autumn’s sweet, we call it fall
I’ll make it to the moon if I have to crawl and

[Chorus]
(I will share this lonely)
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing
(I will share this lonely)
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing
(I will share this lonely)
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing

[Verse 1]
Scar tissue that I wish you saw
Sarcastic mister know-it-all
Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
‘Cause with the birds I’ll share

[Chorus]
(I will share this lonely)
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing
(I will share this lonely)
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing
(I will share this lonely)
With the birds, I’ll share this lonely viewing

I know the Chili Peppers were a big deal to many people in the 80s and 90s, but I really don’t think I knew of any of their songs other than “Under the Bridge,” which I do like. Coincidentally, Daniel has added that song to his set and just played it last night at Tommy Bahama.😉
