Song of the Day #6,099: ‘Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go’ – Hank Ballard and The Midnighters

The next backing group inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2012 is The Midnighters, whose frontman Hank Ballard joined in 1990.

This case is more open and shut than most, in that almost all of Ballard’s success came with The Midnighters. He released three solo albums and a handful of singles, none of which amounted to much, while the band was all over the pop and R&B charts in the 50s and 60s.

It would be like inducting Tom Petty as a solo artist but not The Heartbreakers (but different, because Petty released three very successful solo albums). For the record, Petty and The Heartbreakers are in the Hall together.

The Midnighters were the first act to record ‘The Twist,’ which they put in the top ten before Chubby Checker made it a #1 hit later the same year. And they were the first act in Billboard history to have three songs on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously (‘The Twist,’ ‘Finger Poppin’ Time,’ and today’s SOTD). The next group to pull that off was The Beatles.

There’s a thrill upon the hill
Let’s go, let’s a-go, let’s go
There’s a thrill upon the hill
Let’s go, let’s a-go, let’s go

There’s a house honey, way across town
People coming from miles around
Put on your pretty red dress
Let’s go see about this mess
That’s it, baby let’s git
And go way far upon the hill

We’re gonna have a whole lotta fun
We gonna greet the risin’ sun
All night long we gonna ball
Until we hear yo mama call
That’s it, baby let’s git
And go way far upon the hill

There’s a thrill upon the hill
Let’s go, let’s a-go, let’s go
There’s a thrill upon the hill
Let’s go, let’s a-go, let’s go

Let’s go!

Eee-yeah!
Everybody’s gonna be there
My friends and yours from everywhere
Oh, what a time it’s gonna be!
Come on baby, let’s go see
That’s it, baby let’s git
And go way far upon the hill

There’s a thrill upon the hill
Let’s go, let’s a-go, let’s go

There’s a thrill upon the hill
A-let’s go, let’s a-go, let’s go

  1. Dana Gallup says:

The name is vaguely familiar to me, but certainly good to learn about him (and them) from a rock history perspective.
