The week of March 9, 1965, was stacked with hits. This is one of those weeks when the top three songs are repeats not because they’ve been featured on previous Throwback Weekends, but because they are classic songs I’ve written about for other reasons.
At #1 was a little group called The Beatles, whose ‘Eight Days a Week‘ topped the chart for the first time that week. Right behind it was ‘My Girl‘ by the Temptations. And rounding out the top three was another Motown classic, The Supremes’ ‘Stop! In the Name of Love.’
Imagine living your daily life while those three songs were all new releases.
In the fourth spot was a song that does owe its repeat status to Throwback Weekends: ‘This Diamond Ring‘ by Gary Lewis & the Playboys.
And that brings us to #5, ‘The Birds and the Bees’ by Jewel Akens. Akens had recorded with a couple of bands and as a duo called Jewel and Eddie, but he recorded this one solo when none of his bandmates showed interest.
Good call, because it became his biggest (and only) hit, peaking at #3 in the U.S. and reaching the top ten in several other countries.
‘The Birds and the Bees’ is credited to Era Records owner Herb Newman, but rumor has it the song was actually written by his 12-year-old son.
Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called “Love”
[Verse 2]
Let me tell ya ’bout the stars in the sky
And a girl and a guy
And the way they could kiss
On a night like this
[Chorus]
When I look into your big brown eyes
It’s so very plain to see
That it’s time you learned about the facts of life
Starting from A to Z
[Verse 3]
Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called “Love” (Yeah!)
[Chorus]
When I look into your big brown eyes
It’s so very plain to see
That it’s time you learned about the facts of life
[Verse 4]
Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called “Love”
[Verse 5]
Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
[Outro]
‘Bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
Quite a drop off after those classic great top 3 songs, and this one seems like it was written by a 12 year old.🤪
I remember this song and It’s hard to believe this was playing the year I got married almost 60 years ago 🙂
