Song of the Day #6,086: ‘Be Bop A Lula’ – Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps

The 2012 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class was much larger than most, and that’s because the Hall decided that year to acknowledge backing bands that didn’t make it in with their lead singers.

Six such acts were inducted in 2012, all given the green light by a special committee and not subject to the usual voting process.

Our first example is The Blue Caps, who backed up rocker Gene Vincent. Vincent made it into the Hall in 1998, acknowledged for his contributions to early rock-n-roll and specifically the rockabilly genre.

The Blue Caps got their name from the flat, yes, blue caps they wore while performing, as seen in the clip below from the 1956 film The Girl Can’t Help It. That Jayne Mansfield comedy featured performances of 19 early rock songs, and was an inspiration for a young John Lennon.

[Chorus]
Well be-bop-a-lula, she’s my baby
Be-bop-a-lula, I don’t mean maybe
Be-bop-a-lula, she’s my baby
Be-bop-a-lula, I don’t mean maybe
Be-bop-a-lula, she’s my baby doll
My baby doll, my baby doll

[Verse 1]
Well, she’s the girl in the ripped blue jeans
She’s the queen of all the teens
She’s the woman that I know
She’s the woman that loves me so

[Chorus]
Say, be-bop-a-lula, she’s my baby
Be-bop-a-lula, I don’t mean maybe
Be-bop-a-lula, she’s, she’s my baby doll
My baby doll, my baby doll
Rock and roll

[Verse 2]
Well, now she’s the woman that’s got that beat
Uh, he’s the woman with the flying feet
Uh. she’s the one that walks around the store
She’s the one that gives more, more, more, more

[Chorus]
Well, be-bop-a-lula, she’s my baby
Be-bop-a-lula, I don’t mean maybe
Be-bop-a-lula, she’s my baby
Be-bop-a-lula, I don’t mean maybe
Be-bop-a-lula, she’s my baby doll
My baby doll, my baby doll

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I had always assumed this was a song by Elvis Presley. Obviously, I was wrong.
