Song of the Day #6,052: ‘Starburned and Unkissed’ – Caroline Polachek

I’ll have a lot more to say about I Saw the TV Glow in a couple of weeks, so today I’ll just note that it has one of the year’s best soundtracks.

Consisting of both music written for the film and deep cut alternative rock songs, it lives in the same uneasy emotional space as the film itself. Writer/director Jane Schoenbrun said they wanted the soundtrack to be a “teen angst classic” and, well, mission accomplished.

I could have picked any of a handful of scenes from this film to highlight, including live performances of the elegant ‘Claw Machine’ by Sloppy Jane and Phoebe Bridgers or the bracing ‘Psychic Wound’ by King Woman.

I’m going with a scene from earlier in the movie that I feel captures the film’s nostalgic tone, its formal ingenuity, and its overall dreamlike quality.

Shy high school student Owen has bonded with an older classmate, Maddy, over a shared interest in a TV show called The Pink Opaque. In this clip, we see Owen (in an unbroken tracking shot) walking the halls of their school to pick up a VHS tape she has left for him. To mark the passage of time and their deepening connection with the show and each other, we see Maddy’s handwritten notes catching Owen up on all the details.

Something about the marriage of music and image in this scene grabs me by the throat. I’m not alone. One YouTube commenter wrote “The school hallway sequence changed the trajectory of my life,” which is exactly the kind of over-the-top fanaticism this movie both interrogates and invites.

[Verse 1]
Wake up
Distorted to the bone
Salt on deman
Say you miss it
But, oh, I know you don’t
How many plans with
Girls with makeup

[Pre-Chorus]
Hey, you Casanova
Hey, you supernova

[Chorus]
Come home
The kettle’s whistling
My heart’s a ghost limb reaching
Starburned and unkissed

[Verse 2]
Deep fried
This isn’t how to be
Naked of charms
In your long sleeve
A bitter little seed
In digital sand and
Then you wake up

[Pre-Chorus]
Hey, you Casanova
Hey, you supernova

[Chorus]
Come home
The kettle’s whistling
My heart’s a ghost limb reaching
Starburned and unkissed
Come home
The kettlе’s whistling
My heart’s a ghost limb reaching
Starburned and unkissеd

[Bridge]
Tried to kiss the glass, it tastes like cold
Just know that I adore you
Baby, say the word when you get bored
‘Til then, I’m waiting for you

[Outro]
(Come home)
My heart’s a ghost limb reaching
Reaching, reaching, reaching, reaching
Starburned and unk—

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Well, “changed the trajectory of my life” is a lot, but my interest in seeing this movie has been piqued.

  2. Peg says:

Never heard of this movie. Interesting

  3. Amy says:

I wanted to see this film quite a bit but then lost interest after reading Fiona’s negative review many months ago on Letterboxd. Curious to see it now to see it now.

I’m a sucker for a creative time passage scene. My favorite is the gorgeous sequence in Notting Hill where Grant’s character walks through the market as seasons – and the lives of the town’s characters – change all around him.
