The week of January 19, 1985, saw Madonna atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Like a Virgin.’
At #2 that week was the one hit single by General Hospital‘s Jack Wagner, ‘All I Need.’ Wagner’s tune, the title track from his debut album, stayed at #2 for two weeks, kept from the top spot by Madonna.
I knew this song at the time through my older sister, a fan of both General Hospital and Wagner’s character Frisco. I recall this album getting a fair amount of play on her turntable.
Wagner married his GH co-star, Kristina Malandro (who played Felicia), in the early 90s after they secretly dated for years. The couple had two children before filing for divorce, reconciling, and filing for divorce again. Their younger son died of a drug overdose in 2022. Talk about a soap opera.
Kissin’ you was not what I had planned
And now I’m not so sure just where I stand
I wasn’t lookin’ for true love
But now you’re lookin’ at me
You’re the only one I can think of
You’re the only one I see
[Chorus]
All I need
Is just a little more time
To be sure what I feel
Is it all in my mind
‘Cause it seems so hard to believe
That you’re all I need
[Verse 2]
Yes, it’s true we’ve all been hurt before
But it doesn’t seem to matter anymore
It may be a chance we’re takin’
But it always comes to this
If this isn’t love we’re makin’
Then I don’t know what it is
[Chorus]
All I need
Is just a little more time
To be sure what I feel
Is it all in my mind
‘Cause it seems so hard to believe
[Chorus]
All I need
Is just a little more time
To be sure what I feel
Is it all in my mind
‘Cause it seems so hard to believe
That you’re all I need
[Bridge]
No stars are out tonight
But we’re shinin’ our own light
And it’s never felt so right
‘Cause girl the way I’m feelin’
It’s easy to believe
That you’re all I need
We have in common that both of our big sisters were fans of General Hospital. It rubbed off on me as my junior high nerdy self made GH my “favorite addiction.” (remember THAT song?). It really is amazing just how popular that soap opera was in the early 80s!
I recall Frisco and Felicia and this song, certainly, but I don’t recall having an album by Jack Wagner. It’s possible your memory is better than mine or that I was playing the 45 on repeat.
